We're Back!

Savino’s Hideaway Restaurant is a local landmark located on North Country Road in Mount Sinai’s historic district and is a short distance from Cedar Beach.

Set in a log cabin, built in 1930 by Carl Heyser, the building originally served as a model and office for Heyser’s plan to build a summer community of log cabins throughout Mount Sinai and Miller Place.

His brochures aptly described a “cabin in the woods” that lies in a bucolic and picturesque setting. The idea served to entice city dwellers to spend their summers in a “cozy” log cabin while frolicking along the shores of the Long Island Sound.

At the time many cabins didn’t include kitchens and visitors began to flock the office for lunch. As a result, the dwelling slowly evolved into a make-shift lodge/ tea room created by Heyser’s wife Florence.

Many affairs and functions were held here including outside jazz performances by legendary jazz greats such as Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway.

Throughout the war years several USO dances were also held here. In the 1950’s, Marilyn Monroe and famous author Authur Miller, spent their summers directly across the street at the famed Chandler’s estate. (We have two cocktails on the menu called “Chandler’s Secret” and “Marilyn’s Favorite”).

The first restaurant that opened at this location was The Captain Roman’s Inn and it remained as such until Mr. Savino acquired the property in 1976 and Savino’s Hideaway was born.

Mr. Savino ran the Hideaway for the better part of 30 years until he decided to retire in 1999.

In late August of 2012, after a 13 year hiatus, Mr. Savino decided to come out of his retirement and re-open Savino’s Hideaway. He felt it important to leave a lasting legacy for his three children and eight grandchildren. Mr. Savino is proud to have served a community that has been so good to him for all these years and he hopes to continue to serve for many years to come.

We invite you to take a step back in time and see the history on our walls.

We look forward to seeing you down at the Hideaway and becoming part of our family.
